According to Forbes magazine, in 2008, SukantoTanoto succeeded in having total net US$ 2.8 billion which put him on rank 418th on the Forbes list of 500 richest people in the world.
He started his career as a business man as a supplier for Pertamina, an oil firm that owned by the state. He supplied Pertamina with both equipment and materials. In 1973, he chose to change his focus to forest industry. In New York Stock Exchange he was able to get Asia Pacific Resources International which was a pulp and paper business. As of now, he owned Royal Golden Eagle International as his business vehicle. It is a holding company that focuses on many things such as palm oil, construction, paper, to energy business.
Despite being a successful business man, Tanoto did not come from a rich family. To the contrary, his father was an immigrant from China. Born on December 25, he was born as the first child in his family. When he was only 17 years old, back in 1966, he was forced to stop attending school because of all of the Chinese schools were shut down. But this did not deter Tanoto, he tried to learn by himself. He admitted that he never learnt Bahasa Indonesia in a formal way. And thus, he began his business. He worked relentlessly, sixteen hours per day. But his hard work was not in vain as what we can see him right now.
