Recently, Sukanto Tanoto through his Tanoto Foundation in cooperation with PT. Riau Andalan Pulp and Paper (RAPP) has conducted campaigns to preserve the environment. The campaign was carried out around the area of  Kuansing. The main agenda of the activity is to prepare trainers from every school to socialize the importance of having healthy and environmentally friendly school. The program was held for three days, from Tuesday, November 4, 2014 to Thursday November 6, 2014 at the Hall of Hotel Kuantan. The environmental awareness program is receiving pretty good appreciation from many parties and perceived to be a positive activity.

Sukanto Tanoto Raising Environmental Awareness

The event, which was in the form of sharing and discussion, aimed at improving the quality of trainers as well as enhancing their knowledge about the environment and the right way to treat it. These trainers are supposed to be the facilitators and pioneers to promote the environmental health awareness towards the community where they come from.

Sukanto Tanoto and RAPP have made some partnerships with the other related parties, such as the Department of Education, Badan Lingkungan Hidup (The Environment Agency), the Department of Health, and health centers. Some schools that had received the Adiwiyata Award and other healthy school awards were also invited to share their experiences to the 20 representatives from 10 different schools.

These schools are assisted under the supervision of Tanoto Foundation in Central Kuantan District, Benai, Kuantan Hilir and Inuman, and Kuantan Senggigi District. The event is expected to be a part of yearly program held by the RGE Group company in Riau Province. Thus, it will be a continuous program that will educate more and more people to love the environment.

Inspiring program for environmental preservation

The activity done by Sukanto Tanoto through his foundation and RAPP has an important role in inspiring the community to do the same thing for the environment. The Indonesia’s tycoon is quite well known for his cares to the social welfare as well to the environmental conservation. Therefore, the campaigns can be a trigger for the other positive programs from the community. This will then be expected to give broader influences with more and more people aware of conserving the environment.

Sukanto Tanoto is quite active in promoting the environment conservation. This is done not only though campaigns, but also in his businesses. He has encouraged the use of energy more efficiently and the creation of alternative energy for his business operation. RAPP Helps to Reduce Conflict with Elephants in Riau

As the founder and chairman of RGE group, Sukanto Tanoto has a great heart, as the tycoon also does something more than merely business. Together with his wife, and now his son, Anderson Tanoto, the family works hand in hand with the government to create better systems in education, social, and economic development of Indonesia that can improve the quality of life of the people in general.

Tanoto Foundation is not only focusing on the development of humankind, but also emphasizing on the importance of taking care of the environment and its contents, including plants and animals. Besides giving back to the local community, Mr. Tanoto also understands that a sustainable life cannot be achieved without preserving the nature.

Sumatran Elephants in Riau in the Danger of Extinction

As one of the subsidiaries of Asia Pacific Resources International Limited, or APRIL, part of the RGE Group headed by Sukanto Tanoto, Riau Andalan Pulp & Paper (RAPP) realizes the issue of conflict between human and animals in Riau need immediate serious intervention. It is now that the company dedicates its efforts to minimize the human-elephant conflict in Riau Province, Sumatra, by providing protection to the animal. The Sumatran elephants are now facing the danger of extinction due to the irresponsible acts of humans that kill them and take the ivory. They kill the animals because the elephants destruct their land or because the local people have irresponsible purposes.

By collaborating with different institutions and concerned stakeholders, including the World Wildlife Fund, Tesso Nilo National Park Authority (BTNTN), and Tesso Nilo National Park Foundation (YTNTN), the company builds protection for the elephants by establishing Elephant Flying Squad (EFS). The function of this organization is to give better protection by holding patrol in sensitive areas. In addition, it encourages wild elephants to get back into the forest in order to minimize conflict with the human.

RAPP Realizes the Need to Conserve Wild Elephants

RAPP is one of the major producers that manufacture paper for the global needs. Because the business and operation of RAPP takes places near the Tesso Nilo National Park, and other conflicting areas, RAPP feels the responsibility to take part in the conservation of nature.

Because wild elephants frequently invade the plantation and human residence areas, wide degree of disruption has resulted from the damage, so the people started to hunt them. The Sumatran elephant is protected animal, so it is important for the company to protect them, as well as to provide facilities to solve the problem. It is important to keep the elephants away from the residence areas so human will not kill them. RAPP through Tanoto Foundation continues to protect forest and develop wildlife conversation around the plantation.
